Clean Marine Growth from the Pontoon Logs

How would you like to spray a cleaner on and just wash it off?   Of course we would.  Its just not gonna happen, right?  Well, maybe it could.  We have found a great cleaner that just might take a lot of time out of the task for cleaning the pontoons.  The product is called Oxi-solv® .    Since its introduction to our product line late last summer (1998) it has been one of our highest sellers across the United States.  Many people have even purchased from us twice already.

It does not exactly spray on.  Instead it is brushed on or rolled on using a standard paint brush or roller.  The product is let stand to do its work for about 10 -15 minutes and then is rinsed off with a standard garden hose.   Sounds too good to be true doesn't it?  Many have used it just this way and have been very satisfied.

Our suggestion is that you knock off as much marine growth as possible before brushing on the Oxi-solv®.   This is best done straight out of the water.  The marine growth is easier to work with when it is wet.  Use a garden hose and spray as much of the growth off as is possible.  Use a nylon bristle brush to aid in loosening the marine growth.   By pre-washing the surface Oxi-Solv will be able to clean and brighten the surface better.

The next step is to apply Oxi-solv® from the lower part of the pontoon logs toward the top.  This method allows the cleaner to be applied more completely and avoid streaking or missing an area on the pontoon logs.   The manufacturer suggests letting it set for 5 to 15 minutes.  This will happen as you continue to apply the product and wait to rinse until all the surfaces have been covered.

Finally, rinse the pontoon logs.  How do they look?  They should look like new or as close as possible for an older pontoon.

The product is environmentally safe and biodegradable.  This in itself is unique for a cleaner.  It removes growth, stains, and oxidation.  The removal of oxidation is something most other pontoon cleaners do not do very well.  They often leave the pontoon logs looking black and dull.

There are things that no pontoon cleaner can do. If a pontoon log has been etched by lime deposits or pitted by salt a cleaner will not effect these problems.  This often happens due to poor maintenance or none at all.  Using Oxi-solv® from the beginning of your pontoon ownership will help to prevent these problems.

New pontoons have a chemical treatment called anodization done to the pontoon logs.  This can be changed by some cleaners and cause the logs to have problems with severe oxidation later on.  Oxi-solv® does not attack the anodization.  Boats with anodization do not shine like bright metal when they are clean.  The finish on anodized aluminum is often a little dull looking but not black.  Oxi-solv® will bring them back to the original finish without damaging the anodization of the pontoon logs.
